Land Acknowledgement:  President of the Board Carol Mathews read the District’s formal statement that recognizes our area’s Indigenous Peoples as the original stewards of the land that College of the Redwoods occupies. 

We acknowledge that the land on which we are gathered today is unceded territory of the Wiyot people who continue to live and thrive on this land today. It is surrounded by the traditional, ancestral, and present homeland of several indigenous nations including the Hupa, Karuk, Mattole, Tolowa, Wailaki, and Yurok that make up Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

Continued Discussion of Trustee Area Redistricting Options: Colette Santsche and Jason Barnes from Planwest Partners facilitated a follow-up discussion with the Board on three Trustee redistricting options. I attached the three options discussed to this blog article.

• Option 1 keeps as close to the current trustee areas as possible while balancing the population distribution. The total population deviation for Option 1 is 6.8%.

• Option 2 reduces the size of Trustee Area 7 because it consumes such a large footprint and reworks the other Trustee Areas as well. The population distribution for Option 2 is 9.4%.

• Option 3 uses the recently adopted Humboldt County redistricting maps to inform the Trustee Area boundaries in Humboldt County. This option refines the Trustee Area boundaries to define a south county coastal area, an expanded Eureka area, and a Blue Lake/McKinleyville/Trinidad area among others. The population distribution for Option 3 is 7.8%. 

There was consensus with forwarding the third option to the Board for approval on February 1, 2022.

Discussion of the Student and Employee Satisfaction survey results and the Student Enrollment and Success Data: Dr. Angelina Hill did a wonderful job facilitating a discussion of the survey results and describing how the Trustees can use the Chancellor’s Office data mart to enhance their policy making role. We will deploy the Employee and Student Satisfaction surveys again in the spring of 2023.

Discuss Progress of Selected Board of Trustees Goals: The Board agreed to discuss their 2021-23 Goals on a quarterly basis (March, June, September and December).
