CR’s Hartwell crowned in state meet
College of the Redwoods runner Hannah Hartwell posted the winning time of 17:29 to take the junior college state championship in the women’s 5,000-meter race on Saturday. The Carlsbad born runner finished third in the state meet in the 1,500-meter race.
Hartwell has had an outstanding season at CR this year, with top state marks in the 800 meters (2:16.23), 800 meters (4:33.11) and a previous 17:17.35 mark in the 5,000 meters.
Hartwell was not the only podium placing for CR at the meet. Eureka’s Josie Peterson placed second in the women’s javelin throw, with a 39.43 meter effort. Peterson has previously posted the top mark for the javelin throw at the state level and is ranked third nationwide among community college athletes in this discipline.
