Bryce Rose Signs with Cal Maritime

After a year off from the hardwood, College of the Redwoods forward Bryce Rose will be resume his basketball career at California Maritime Academy.  Rose, also a Eureka High School product, played for the Corsairs during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.  He was selected to First Team All-Golden Valley Conference, as well as to the All-GVC Defensive Team, following the 2014-15 season.  During that season the 6-6” Rose averaged 8.7 points per game, 8.4 rebounds per game and 1.6 block shots a game, good for 18th highest in the state.

Rose declined some offers to play following the 2014-15 season, opting instead to return to Redwoods to concentrate on academics.  The coaches at Cal Maritime continued to stay in touch with Rose during the year and have convinced him to continue his education and playing career.

California Maritime Academy, located in Vallejo, is a part of the California State University System.  The Keelhaulers compete in the California Pacific Conference (CalPac) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  Their men’s basketball team took the Cal Pac championship in 2015-16 with an overall record of 23-10, played in the NAIA national tournament and finished the season ranked #20 in the NAIA post-season poll.

Cal Maritime head coach Bryan Rooney had this say regarding signing Rose, “We are thrilled that Bryce is joining the Keelhauler family.  During the recruiting process and our conversations with Coach Mora and his fellow Corsairs, it was very clear how much pride Bryce takes in being the best possible teammate he can be.  We value ‘commitment to team’ as highly as any quality we evaluate and Bryce is off the charts in this area. Bryce has tremendous potential as a basketball player and more importantly as a leader on our campus.  Our staff and our players are extremely excited and fortunate to be part of his journey.”

Redwoods head coach Justin Mora commented on Rose, “We are excited for Bryce to be able to continue his education and extend his basketball career.  He’s a tremendous competitor and a difference maker, especially on the defensive end of the floor.  He has the ability to not only block shots, but also to change shots, which is intimidating to opposing players.  Cal Maritime is getting a team guy and a good student and good person.”
