Dear College of the Redwoods student,
This year the Book of the Year Committee (with the generous support of the College’s administration) was able to provide 950 free copies of this year’s book selection, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.
If you were given one of those free copies, or someone loaned you their copy, we hope that you’ve had a chance to read it and utilize the strategies suggested on the bookmark. If not, we’d encourage you to take it off the shelf and read it over the winter break, so you can participate in one of the discussion forums we’ll be hosting at all the CR campuses during the week of February 5-9. These forums are a great place to discover deeper understanding of the book through discussion with others. Even if you've never attended a book discussion before, join us! Whether you voice comments and questions or contribute by listening and reflecting on the reading, everyone is welcome!
For those of you at the Eureka campus, there will be four discussion forums:
English faculty member Nicole Bryant Lescher on Monday, Feb. 5 in the Performing Arts
Theater from 3-4 pm:
English and Environmental Ethics faculty member Peter Blakemore Tuesday, Feb. 6 in
Humanities 110 from 3-4 pm
Biology faculty member Diqui LaPenta Wednesday, Feb. 7 in the Performing Arts
Theater from 3-4 pm
Sociology faculty member Dana Maher on Thursday, Feb. 8 in the new Multi Cultural
Center (LRC 103 in the Library) from 11:45-12:45
For those of you at the Del Norte campus, History and Political Science faculty member Will Meriwether will lead the discussion in room DA1 on February 8th, from 1:30-2:30.
For those of you at the Klamath Trinity campus, Ana Kolpin and English faculty member Sean Herrera-Thomas will lead the discussion in HTEC 1 on Wednesday, February 7th from 3:00 - 4:00 pm.
We’re excited to hear what you think, what you have to say, what questions you have about the text, and what intrigued you about the story.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Professor David Holper, Book of the Year Chair at email@example.com or call (707) 476-4370.
