Facilities

Del Norte and Mendocino Halls are located right on the edge of a magnificent redwood forest on the northeast corner of the campus. Mendocino Hall has rooms with doors opening to the outside, while Del Norte's room doors lead to an enclosed hallway. The rooms inside Mendocino and Del Norte are the same inside. The study hall is located on the second floor of Del Norte Hall.

Student Rooms

Double occupancy rooms are connected to a neighboring room by a private bathroom. Rooms are furnished with a bed, a dresser, a desk, a vanity sink and mirror unit, and a large closet. Rooms are provided with basic cable TV service and internet access via WiFi.

Shared Common Areas

The residence halls have study areas as well as lounges and other spaces that are suitable for indoor recreation. There are pool and ping pong tables, foosball, and a big screen TV with cable. Sunday through Thursday evenings, residents are welcome to use the Field House basketball court, as well as the campus weight room.

For our students' convenience there are laundry facilities and food and beverage vending machines located in each building. Outside, there are large lawns for recreation, picnic tables, and plenty of access to the trails that wander through the surrounding forest. Also, within a few minutes' drive there's the Bayshore Mall, many gorgeous beaches, the cities of Eureka, Fortuna, and Arcata and the Victorian village of Ferndale. And--about 35 minutes south of the campus--you'll find the famous redwood grove known as the "Avenue of the Giants".

Meal Plan

Every student who lives in the residence hall is required to purchase a meal plan. Please review related costs in the Application Packet.

Every resident will need their meal card, which includes a photo. If you are visiting campus prior to the semester starting, please be sure to get your ID card picture taken at the Counseling and Advising window, located in the Student Services building first floor.

Dining Services is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the week while classes are in session, serving a wide variety of cuisines for people of all tastes. There is a deli, soups, a salad bar, grill to order, and daily specials. There is also a convenience store located in the cafeteria where you can buy drinks, snacks, and sundries.

Frequently Asked Questions

The nearest town is Eureka, which is about 7 miles away from campus.

The nearest commercial airport is located in McKinleyville (airport code ACV), which is about 25 miles north of campus.

No, you don't need a car, but it is convenient. About 50% of residents have cars so chances are that you will know someone with a car. There is also public transportation that runs only on the weekdays. If you are planning to work off campus it is better to have a car.

The residence halls have two parking lots for residence use only. You will need to purchase a parking permit from the Security Office. For more information regarding parking permits, please call the Security Office at 707 476-4112. More information can be found here.

We have spaces for about 150 residents.

Each room comes with 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 desk chairs, 2 dressers, 1 sink and a large shared closet. Two rooms are connected with a bathroom that has a toilet and shower stall.

While this list could go on and on, we'll cover the basics here. You'll want to bring the following: Pillows, sheets (twin XL), laptop (there are 3 desk tops in the Del Norte Lounge for resident use), hangers, alarm clock, desk lamp, your favorite movies (we have a dvd and blu-ray player for residents to check out), power strips with surge protectors, small trashcan, towels, toiletries, rain gear.

Residents are allowed to have a mini refrigerator and microwave in their rooms. If you'd like, you can coordinate with your roommate to share these items.

If you marked "Yes" on the roommate questionnaire for the Housing Office to be able to share your contact information with your roommate, you will be notified when you have been paired with your roommate with each other's contact information. Roommate pairings will start later in July.

Again, this list could go on and on. Things to leave at home include: space heaters, irons, candles/ incense, Foreman-type grills, toaster/toaster ovens, hot plates, crockpots, electric blankets, lava lamps, extension cords without surge protectors, full size sofas and futons.

If you have questions if you should buy something, it is best to contact the Housing Office prior to purchasing the items.

The rooms and the quads are not co-ed, but the floors are. This means a different gender could live next door or across the hall from you.

In an effort to serve the largest number of College of the Redwoods students possible, we attempt to fill all spots in our halls. Single rooms are considered by the Housing Director on a case by case basis. Any student granted single occupancy will be required to pay double the cost of housing. If a student has any questions regarding a single room for their term here, they should call the Housing office to discuss their circumstances in more detail at 707-476-4294.

First you and your roommate are asked to meet with a staff member to work out the issue. Secondly, you or your roommate may be relocated to another room. No room changes will be made until after the second week of the semester. Excessive room changes may lead to additional cleaning fees.

There are two laundry facilities in the residence halls, one in each building. This does not mean that one hall can't do laundry in the other hall, all laundry facilities are for all residents. All machines are quarter operated- $1.50 wash, $1.00 dry. There is a quarter machine located in the Housing Office.

Contracts are available for the full year or for individual semesters. In either case, you are obligated for the full term of the contract that you sign. The only way to be released from your contract is if after a review of the individual circumstances for any departing student the Director of Residential Life or his/her designee has determined that the student is leaving school and has verifiable extenuating circumstances. Please know that if you cancel your contract once the residence halls have opened, you will be subject to a cancellation fee. Without being released, you are fully obligated to your contract.

Residents are free to come and go from the residence halls without checking in.

Staff

Director & Assistant Director of Residential Life

The Directors of Residential Life have the role of oversight and management of the housing program at the College of the Redwoods. The responsibilities of these positions are many and varied: long-range program planning; training, supervision and evaluation of the  full-time residence hall staff members; physical plant maintenance; working to maintain a safe, secure environment for residents; summer program coordination; and helping to set and maintain community standards of behavior.

Residential Assistants

Each floor in the residence halls has a part-time student staff member, the Resident Assistant (RA). The RAs are para-professionals who are hired and extensively trained by the college as peer helpers. An RA is responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of a group of approximately 30 students. If residents have questions or need help or friendly advice, the RA is usually the student’s best resource. RAs also plan activities and events to help make community living more enjoyable.
