From Ocean to Hatchery

Prepare for a career in aquaculture and ecosystem management with hands-on training in fin fish and shellfish production. The Aquaculture Technology program at CR combines applied science, math, and real-world experience to get you job-ready for opportunities in private aquaculture, government hatcheries, or your own aquaculture venture. If you’re passionate about working with aquatic organisms in dynamic outdoor environments, this is the program for you!

Program Information

This program provides students with knowledge of aquaculture practices, principles, and techniques for culturing different aquatic species in various production systems. Students gain technical knowledge, skills, and quantitative tools that are applicable towards real-world settings. In this program students acquire hands-on skills for assessing water quality, husbandry maintenance, system construction, spawning techniques, biosecurity, harvesting methods, and feeding practices. Upon completion, students will have the opportunity to go straight into the industry or further their education.

  • California consumes the most seafood compared to any other state in the United States.
  • Aquaculture production in California is extremely diverse. Species include oysters, abalone, mussels, clams, seaweed, channel catfish, tilapia, sturgeon, stripped bass, and rainbow trout.
  • Aquaculturist help bring a variety of healthy fin fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants from aquatic environments to our dinner table.
