Dr. Justine Shaw holds both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Before joining College of the Redwoods, she taught part-time at several colleges and universities in the greater Dallas–Fort Worth area. An accomplished archaeologist, Dr. Shaw has conducted research in the Yucatán Peninsula for more than three decades, exploring the ancient Maya and their cultural landscapes.
In her teaching, Dr. Shaw emphasizes hands-on learning and student-driven research, creating opportunities for students to engage directly with the methods and questions that shape anthropology. She encourages critical thinking and problem-solving as key components of understanding human behavior and cultural diversity.
Dr. Shaw believes that success in anthropology begins with curiosity and an open, non-judgmental approach to others. “Being able to take multiple perspectives and think critically is essential,” she explains. While some students find opportunities assisting with local archaeological surveys before completing a degree, most professional roles in the field require at least a bachelor’s degree—and those seeking to lead research or secure grants often pursue graduate study.
What she enjoys most about teaching at College of the Redwoods is the enthusiasm students bring to learning and discovery.
Dr. Shaw regularly teaches ANTH 1, 2, 3, and 5, and occasionally ANTH 4.
