The beauty of the redwoods first drew Lupe Galvan to College of the Redwoods. During his first visit to the area in 2012 for a plein air painting trip, he was immediately captivated by the landscape’s unique character and natural inspiration. His background is in painting, with a particular focus on figure painting, though he is also a self-taught landscape painter who continues to find creative energy in Northern California’s scenery.

In his painting and drawing classes, Lupe sees himself as both a guide and a fellow artist, helping students develop their own artistic voices while sharing his deep knowledge of materials, process, and technique. Known for his “art nerd” enthusiasm, he loves discussing pigments, lightfastness, and the chemistry of paint. In his Art Appreciation classes, he brings art history to life through vivid storytelling, sharing memorable and often surprising anecdotes about artists’ lives to connect students with the broader cultural context of art.

Lupe believes the key qualities for success in art are preparation, commitment, and openness to the creative process. While challenges are inevitable, persistence and curiosity often reveal new paths forward. His courses prepare students for a variety of opportunities in the arts, including professional practice, museum work, and art education.

What Lupe values most about teaching at CR is the sense of community and connection. “It’s rewarding to see students grow, gain confidence, and move closer to their goals,” he says.

At College of the Redwoods, Lupe teaches Painting, Figure Drawing, Basic Drawing, Color & Design, and Art Appreciation, and hopes to soon add Art History.
