Paula Amis, a proud College of the Redwoods alumna, graduated with her Associate Degree in Nursing in 2009. Born and raised in Humboldt County, she has worked in a variety of nursing roles throughout her career. Across those experiences, she discovered her passion for education—whether teaching patients, mentoring nurses, or guiding students—and values the opportunity to grow alongside those she teaches.
Her teaching style is dynamic and patient-centered. Paula engages students with multiple approaches that encourage self-directed learning while holding both herself and her students accountable. She believes nursing education should be interactive, supportive, and rooted in real-world practice.
While prior medical experience can be helpful, Paula emphasizes that it isn’t required to succeed in nursing. She encourages students to bring dedication and openness to learning, knowing that nursing offers a wide range of rewarding career paths—from pediatrics and medical-surgical nursing to geriatrics, advanced practice, and beyond.
For Paula, teaching at CR is especially meaningful. Having grown up in Humboldt, she sees her role as a way of giving back to the community and helping the next generation of nurses achieve their goals.
At CR, Paula teaches in the Health Occupations Department with a focus on Pediatrics, Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Geriatrics.
