Good day for former Warriors, H-DNL stars at Humboldt Invite
Aug 2 2024Tianna Thompson continues to set a blistering pace for College of the Redwoods after taking first in both women’s sprints at the weekend Humboldt Invite track and field meet.
Competing at the Redwood Bowl, the former Del Norte Warrior won the 100 meters in a time of 12.565 seconds and placed first in the 200m in a time of 25.59 seconds.
Thompson was one of several local athletes to shine at the local meet.
Another former Del Norte Warrior, Bryson Price, placed first in the men’s shot put for CR with a PR throw of 12.83 meters, while his teammate Junior Nunez, yet another Del Norte graduate, won the men’s javelin with a throw of 47.64 meters.
Cal Poly Humboldt’s recent record breaker Grant Van Emmerik, also had a good day and placed second in the men’s 200m as well as playing a part in the Jacks’ 4x400m winning relay team.
Van Emmerik, a Ferndale graduate who also competed in track for College of the Redwoods, recently set a new school record for the Jacks in the 400m with a time of 47.76 seconds, as he became just the second Lumberjack to ever break 48 seconds in the event.
The previous record had stood for 40 years.
Another former Corsair, Nick Brichta of Arcata, competed on Saturday as an unattached athlete and placed second in the men’s 1500m.
Former Eureka Logger Ginny Brooks also enjoyed a good day competing for the Jacks.
The freshman standout placed third in the women’s long jump and fifth in both the 100m and the 100m hurdles.
Another former Logger, Anna Grimmett, placed fourth in the women’s 3000m steeplechase for the Corsairs with a PR time, while her teammate Chloe Allen was third in the 800m and also had a PR on her way to a fifth-place finish in the women’s 1500m.
CR’s Gabriel Ward placed second in the men’s 100m and sixth in the 200m, while teammate Che Jimenez was third in the 400m, followed by former CR and McKinleyville High standout Owen Lien, who is now competing for Oregon Tech and was fifth in the 400m.
CR’s Henry Lamb also was fifth in the men’s 1500m, while two former Loggers, Charlotte Leonard and Daniel Shaver, both placed fifth for Cal Poly in the women’s and men’s 5K, respectively.
Another Lumberjacks freshman from Eureka High, Joseph Gonzalez, was fourth in the men’s discus.
CR’s Airiana Adams had a busy day, placing fifth in the women’s discus, as well as sixth in the shot put and ninth in the javelin, while teammate Gabriel Cervantes was fifth in the men’s hammer and CR’s Violet Cayton and Chase McFarland placed third and fourth in the women’s hammer, respectively.
McFarland also was seventh in the women’s discus.
