CR Partners with HCFIA and CAL FIRE
Jan 16 2025College of the Redwoods Partners with HCFIA and CAL FIRE to Expand Fire Service Training Opportunities
College of the Redwoods is proud to announce a new partnership through an Instructional Services Agreement (ISA) with the Humboldt County Fire Instructors Association (HCFIA) and the CAL FIRE Humboldt Del Norte Unit.
Once the curriculum is shared and implemented, HCFIA students will go through College of the Redwoods, allowing CR to grow its cohort and train more students. Teaching will initially occur at CR, HCFIA, and CAL FIRE facilities, ensuring greater access to training across the region.
This agreement will also introduce fire training courses designed to meet the needs of local fire agencies and assist firefighters in earning additional certifications. These certifications will enhance the skills of current and future firefighters, improve their hiring prospects, and create new pathways for career advancement in the fire service field. Additionally, public agency employees will now have the opportunity to earn college credit for completing mandated annual training, further emphasizing the value of professional development in the fire service.
“The Fire Technology Program is very excited to see this strong community collaboration come to fruition and enhance our ability to provide valuable fire service training to our community,” said Sean Robertson, Assistant Professor of Fire Technology and program coordinator for College of the Redwoods. “This partnership not only supports our students but also strengthens the overall capacity of our local fire agencies.”
Under this agreement, the Humboldt County Fire Instructors Association will provide qualified instructors, equipment, and facilities for the courses, while College of the Redwoods will oversee program development, student registration, and the awarding of college credit. All curricula will be reviewed and approved by CR’s curriculum committee to ensure the highest educational standards.
“This ISA marks a significant step forward for fire training in our community,” said Sean Wilson, Battalion Chief, CAL FIRE Humboldt-Del Norte Unit. “This collaboration will not only enhance the skills of our firefighters but also ensure that we are preparing the next generation of fire service professionals. Together, we are investing in the safety and preparedness of our community, and we are excited to see how this partnership will continue to grow.”
