Juan Perez Brings Passion and Purpose to CR Women’s Soccer

For Juan Perez, the game of soccer has always been more than a sport. It has been a lifelong teacher. Born and raised in Vallejo, California, Perez grew up with a deep love for competition and the game that would shape his future. He played through his youth and into college, later earning a master’s degree in exercise science while continuing to compete. After graduate school, he went on to play semi-professionally, carrying with him lessons from both triumphs and setbacks.

“The highs and lows I experienced as an athlete shaped who I am today and strongly influenced the way I coach,” he says.

Now, as head coach of the College of the Redwoods women’s soccer program, Perez is channeling that experience into helping his players grow both on and off the field.

“Our biggest goals this season are growth and consistency,” he explains. “We want to compete hard in every match, improve game by game, and put ourselves in the best position for a strong season. Beyond wins and losses, it is about building a culture that raises the standard and prepares athletes to compete at the highest level possible.”

For Perez, the true measure of success is not found on the scoreboard. “Success is growth,” he says. “If we finish the season with players who are more skilled, more connected as a team, and stronger as individuals than when we started, then we have succeeded. It is about getting 1% better every day.”

That mindset shows up in every part of his coaching. Practices emphasize discipline, intensity, and purpose, habits that will carry into games and beyond. Setbacks are viewed as opportunities. “A setback is an opportunity for a major comeback,” Perez says. “We review, adjust, and move forward together.”

What drives him most is player development. “The most rewarding part is seeing their growth,” he says. “Watching a player go from unsure of themselves to confident and capable is incredibly fulfilling. For me, it is about helping young athletes achieve their goals both academically and athletically, and preparing them to compete at the next level.”

Perez also prioritizes leadership, giving players responsibility in practices and matches to build their voice and presence. “Leadership is learned,” he explains. “I make sure everyone has a chance to step into that role.”

Players, he hopes, see his approach clearly. “I think they would say I push them hard, but I always have their back. I hold them to a high standard because I believe in what they are capable of.”

Game day for Perez is about focus, routine, and energy. He reviews plans, keeps composure, and ensures the team is ready to compete. Behind the scenes, he and his staff are constantly analyzing film, breaking down opponents, and designing training sessions that sharpen both strategy and skills.

Coaching, however, is about more than tactics for Perez. It is about influence. “I had coaches and mentors who shaped me not just as a player but as a person,” he says. “That is what drew me to coaching. I wanted to have that same impact on others.”

That sense of purpose keeps him motivated year after year. “I am someone who never likes to get complacent. I am always looking for the next challenge. Growing up, I learned to find motivation in setbacks and adversity. As a coach, I want that attitude to be contagious for my players.”

Looking ahead, his hopes for the season are simple but meaningful. “That we stay healthy, keep improving, and finish strong. More than anything, I want the players to look back and be proud of what they accomplished together.”

And to the community, families, and fans who support the team, Perez has one final message. “Thank you for your support, it means more than you know. We could not do this without you.”
