What can I do now? Gather your immunization records! These are strict requirements for this program, the clinical externship and for employment in the healthcare field. We will go over your records with you at any time; This way, you will know what is still needed. The list of required immunizations is available below.

The College of the Redwoods’ Phlebotomy Program is a one (1) semester not for credit program with admission by application and random lottery. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam, followed by completion of a 40-hour clinical externship (unpaid).

Computer Literacy: all Phlebotomy students must possess sufficient computer literacy skills to complete Internet research, communicate by email, create, and upload electronic documents, manage data storage devices, and use web–based instructional materials and applications.

General Information

Eligibility: is contingent upon a completed, cleared, and approved criminal background check and proof of high school diploma, transcripts, or equivalency.

1.  Application Packet: All potential program participants must submit a program application, a completed criminal background check and proof of high school completion (diploma or transcripts) or equivalency (such as GED or HiSET). 

2.  Incomplete application packets will not be accepted by our office.

3.  Criminal background check must be completed through CastleBranch. Instructions are provided below, under “documents to download.” Proof of an order being placed or a status of "in process" are not acceptable versions of the background check.

4.  You will receive an email confirming your application packet has been received and is under review by the College of the Redwoods Adult & Community Education Office. Completed application packets will be reviewed for admittance to the program lottery. If your criminal background check is not satisfactory you will be contacted via email.

Cost of the Program is $2,195.00, including the following:
       -Books, supplies, and materials
      -6 online practice exams and the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam (1 attempt) from the National Healthcareer Association.

       -Placement at a local facility for the externship (unpaid)

Not included (approx. $300.00 - $400.00):

-Criminal Background check

-Physical Exam – cost will vary based on your doctor’s fee and your insurance.

-Immunizations/screenings cost will vary based on your doctor’s fee and your insurance

-Application to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for your CPT1 license (after full program completion)

-Immunizations can be obtained from your doctor, a local pharmacy, or the Public Health Department. These immunizations are absolutely required – no exceptions.

Please note: If you do not have medical insurance or are underinsured, you may qualify for reduced vaccine costs through the Public Health Department.

Other costs may occur as needed for successful completion of the program.

Healthcare requirements are subject to the requirements of the clinical site and College of the Redwoods policies and are subject to change.

Selection Process

Applicants are placed in the lottery and assigned a number for the program. If there are more qualified applicants than available seats (18), the remaining applicants will be assigned a waitlist number based on their initial lottery number.

The Adult and Community Education Office will notify students via email of their conditional acceptance into the Phlebotomy Program, or their program waitlist number. Conditional acceptance = students must provide immunization records and physical examination form.

Notifications will be sent no later than July 22nd, 2026.

To secure your seat in the program once you receive your conditional acceptance email, you must complete and return the registration form and payment by the assigned date along with required immunizations/screenings. If these requirements are not met by the deadline, we will assume forfeiture of your spot. In the event of extenuating circumstances, please contact our office at 707-476-4500.

07.20.2026:  Application Packet Due
--Application packet must include: completed application, completed criminal background check, high school diploma, transcripts, or equivalency Application packets can emailed to: ace@redwoods.edu., or hand-delivered to our office at 527 D St., Eureka. Our office hours are Monday - Thursday, 8:30am-4:30pm. All application packets are thoroughly reviewed by this office.

07.21.2026: Lottery drawing

07.22.2026 Notification of Acceptance or Waitlisted status 
 --Applicants will be notified of their acceptance or waitlisted status via email.

07.30.2026: Immunization Records and Physical Exam form due

07.30.2026: Registration form and payment due. 

Failure to submit all requirements or meet program deadlines will be considered a forfeiture of your seat in the program.

Students that are waitlisted: If/when a seat becomes available, students will be notified by the Adult and Community Education office staff (in order of their waitlist #). Notification to the student will be via phone and email.

Program Location: CR’s Eureka Downtown Site, 527 D St., Eureka, CA

Location of Clinical Externship: At an assigned local Healthcare Facility.

This is a job training program, and students are expected to treat this training as a job. This means students must adhere to the following:

  -Attend all class meetings and all skills labs.
  -Attend all externships days/hours.
 -Arrive on time and stay for the entire class and externship.
 - Keep your cell phone put away during class and at the clinical site.
 -Treat classmates, the instructors, office staff, and clinical staff with respect.
 -Review and sign disclosure documents
