The mission of Student Accessibility Support Services (SASS) is to reduce educational barriers unique to students with medical and/or mental health diagnoses in order to provide learning support and pathways to success, empower self-advocacy, and ensure equity, equal rights, and access for all students under the law.

Student Accessibility Support Services
We have changed our name! If you’re looking for DSPS—Disability Services and Programs
for Students—you're in the right place. We changed our name to be more inclusive for
students who don’t identify with the terms “disability” and “disabled.” We’re not
about labels, we’re about supporting students and providing greater access to education
for students with health conditions. Hence our new name: Student Accessibility Support
Services (SASS).
The primary objective of the SASS office is to assure educational access for students with disabilities and diagnosed physical and mental health conditions. SASS concentrates its efforts on providing services that are not available elsewhere at CR in order to support students with learning differences in overcoming barriers to their success. SASS operates under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sections 504 and 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, and Title 5 of California Education Code.

How does a student become a part SASS?
In order to participate in SASS, a student must fill out an application to the department. The main requirement for our program is that a student must have a verifiable physical or mental health diagnosis and be currently enrolled at CR. Students who suspect they qualify for SASS services but do not have a formal diagnosis are encouraged to contact the SASS office for a consultation.
If a student does not have a diagnosis but finds that they have serious difficulties with their classes, they may have an unidentified learning disability. These students also go through the SASS department for referral to a course called Guidance 143: Introduction to Learning Disabilities, which includes information about and testing for a learning disability. If a student is determined to have a learning disability through this course, then the testing will serve as verification for participation in SASS.
SASS Support Classes
SASS offers courses for academic support through the LIGHT Center, Adaptive Physical Education, and Living Skills.
Alternate Media
SASS Alternate Media Procedures & Policies
Alternate media generally refers to text or other materials produced in a specialized format intended for use by persons with disabilities. Types of alternate media include, but are not limited to: braille, large print, audio material, certain types of electronic files, and video with closed and open captioning.
- Eligibility for this service is determined by the Disability Services and Programs for Students Coordinator or by an LD Specialist and is based in part on the professional documentation provided by the student.
- Alternate media must be requested through a SASS specialist each semester it is needed.
- Students requesting materials in alternative formats must own a physical copy of a textbook or other course material and have proof of purchase before the alternate media will be distributed. Some books might need to be unbound in order to scan them, and would be returned to the student with a different binding.
- Requests for materials in alternative format will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Once a request is made, preference will be given to the format specified by the student. However, the recommendation of SASS professionals will be used in determining the specific media format for each academic course.
- Alternative format requests must be submitted as soon as the student learns of their need; late requests will be honored provided that the students making the request understand that the completion of the work may be delayed.
- Turn-around times for alternative format requests are determined on a case-by-case basis. Upon review of material to be formatted and converted, the Alternate Media Specialist will notify the student of the projected completion date. SASS will make every effort to complete the request in a timely manner.
- Students will be provided with one alternative format copy for each item required for academic use. The student will not copy or reproduce any material provided by SASS, nor allow anyone else to do so. Misuse of this material may result in disciplinary action by College of the Redwoods. (Refer to the Student Code of Conduct) Copyrighted material may not be reproduced or distributed in a format other than a specialized format exclusively for use by blind or other persons with disabilities. Any further reproduction or distribution in a format other than a specialized format is an infringement of Copyright Law.
- Students failing to pickup completed alt media requests will not be eligible for alt media in the following semester
- Student questions regarding alternative media should be addressed directly to the Assistive Technology & Media Specialist, Jason Brewer, by phone at (707) 476-4557 or by email to Jason-Brewer@redwoods.edu.
